The photograms that make up Esterilidad are made from marked-up pages from a book documenting Ciudad Juarez through photographs depicting drug violence, post-NAFTA factory work and migrations to the north. Darkroom-based abstraction is used to highlight a sterilization of violence inherent in documentary image making. Some pull influence from war photography as canonized by Robert Capa and the mark-up methods used for darkroom editing. Others utilize slang terms and make cultural references as interjections to counterpoint against the documentary imagery.
